Indigenous Ranger Sector Strategy consultation now open
The draft Indigenous Ranger Sector Strategy 2022–2028 is now open for public consultation.
Indigenous rangers are a highly valued, skilled and professional workforce and demand for their services is increasing. They are an important part of environmental management, cultural and heritage protection and play a critical role in caring for Country and protecting threatened native species, including in Indigenous Protected Areas (IPAs).
Combining traditional Indigenous knowledge and western science benefits our natural heritage assets and the resilience of our nation. The proposed Strategy will provide extra support to Indigenous ranger groups, beyond the programs funded by Government, to continue working for their Country and communities, to benefit all Australians.
This includes supporting ranger groups to:
- build their capabilities to participate to full potential in local and regional land and water management
- contribute towards disaster resilience and cultural burning for bushfire management
- develop carbon schemes and climate change projects
- maintain biodiversity conservation, environmental rehabilitation, as well as biosecurity prevention, monitoring and compliance.
This public consultation is a chance for everyone with an interest in the Indigenous ranger sector to have a say in its future to help continue strengthening the sector over the coming years.
To provide feedback, review the consultation draft of the Strategy then complete a survey, attend a virtual workshop or provide a written submission.
Consultation closes on Tuesday 31 May 2022.
