National Strategy for Food Security in Remote First Nations Communities

The Australian Government is developing a national strategy for food security in remote First Nations communities (the Strategy) in a partnership with state and territory governments and First Nations health organisations.

The final Strategy and suite of actions will be shaped by consultation.

The consultation schedule is:

  • May 2024: online consultation opens.
  • July-August 2024: in-person regional forums and discussions in remote communities.

We want to hear from you

To help shape the final Strategy and suite of actions, the Australian Government, state and territory governments and First Nations health organisations are seeking feedback.

People can have their say via online submission and through face-to-face consultation sessions (see consultation locations below).

You are able to provide your feedback on Remote Food Security via email to RemoteFSConsultations@niaa.gov.au. Please read our privacy collection statement below.

How to make an online submission:

To provide your feedback, please email RemoteFSConsultations@niaa.gov.au. How to make a submission is up to you – this could include providing feedback in an email or sending through an attachment.

We are interested in your thoughts on remote food security and welcome feedback on anything you think is important. In providing your submission you might want to consider the following questions:

  • What does food security mean to you?
  • How could food security be improved in your community?
  • What community strengths support food security?
  • What do you think of the Focus Areas in the Discussion Paper?
  • What do you think of the Intended Outcomes in the Discussion Paper?
  • What do you think of the Potential Actions in the Discussion Paper?
  • Is there anything important missing from the Discussion Paper?
  • Is there anything in the Discussion Paper that should change?

Submissions will close 11:59pm 11 August 2024.

Discussion paper

Strategy Partners have developed a discussion paper drafted around eight focus areas impacting the remote food system – Country; Health; Housing; Families and Community Infrastructure; Stores; Supply Chains; Healthy Economies; and Policies, Practice and Governance.

The purpose of the discussion paper is to outline the eight focus areas and provide examples of actions to support interested stakeholders in providing their views on the design of the Strategy.

The full discussion paper is available now. An accessible short-form version will be uploaded soon to support engagement.

Consultation materials

To help understand how food insecurity impacts remote communities and what could benefit communities, we have put together a short form discussion paper This document can be read with or in lieu of reading the discussion paper.

Face-to-face consultations

Face-to-face consultation sessions are being held with a range of stakeholders, including with remote communities between July and August 2024. Consultation will be facilitated by PwC Indigenous Consulting.
