Junior Ranger activities support First Nations primary and secondary students to engage with their schooling through a combination of classroom and on Country learning. The majority of activities are delivered by Indigenous organisations in partnership with local Elders and Cultural Knowledge Holders, Traditional Owners, Indigenous Rangers, schools and communities. Teaching and learning components are developed collaboratively, with a focus on field-based activity, drawing on traditional and Western knowledge systems. Field workshops and school-based learning activities are linked to the curriculum and can contribute to achievement of state and territory high school certifications and VET Certificate outcomes.
With the current expansion of Junior Rangers to 50 new locations by 2028, providers need capacity support to successfully deliver and achieve desired outcomes. The Junior Rangers Capacity Building and Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Framework will help ensure the achievement of program objectives to improve school engagement for First Nations primary and secondary students. The framework will include place-based outcomes and tools and techniques which measure early signs of change within the first 2 years of establishing new Junior Rangers projects. The framework will support Junior Rangers providers to share learnings and will inform strategic decisions to enhance service delivery.
