Murray-Darling Basin Aboriginal Water Entitlements

The Australian Government is providing $40 million to help First Nations communities in the Murray-Darling Basin to invest in water for cultural and economic activities through the Aboriginal Water Entitlements Program (AWEP). In October 2022, the Government transferred funding and responsibility for administering AWEP to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) as the lead agency delivering the Government’s plan to safeguard the Murray-Darling Basin. The NIAA recognises the deep expertise held by First Nations people in relation to water management and will continue to work with DCCEEW as it delivers this work.
