The Yirrganydji Indigenous Land Sea Rangers care for Yirrganydji country, which runs north from Cairns to Port Douglas in Queensland.
The rangers undertake natural and cultural resource management activities with Yirrganydji people, management partners and other stakeholders. These activities are guided by Yirrganydji traditional owner priorities. The priorities are captured in the Yirrganydji Traditional Use of Marine Resources Agreement (TUMRA) and the Yirrganydji Sea Country Plan. The activities also align with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority management plans.
The focus of the Yirrganydji Rangers centres on conserving, protecting and enhancing the natural and cultural values of Yirrganydji country for the benefit of current and future generations. Their activities include:
- weed, feral animal and fire management
- biodiversity monitoring and threatened species management especially of turtle and dugong
- cultural heritage conservation
- cultural revitalisation
- school programs that allow Elders and rangers to pass on cultural knowledge, cultural pride, and land and sea management practices.
