The Crocodile Islands Rangers were started by Senior Australian of the Year (2012) Laurie Baymarrwangga. They are based at Milingimbi Island and governed by a traditional owner executive committee.
The rangers manage the land and sea country of the Crocodile Islands, located off the coast of north-east Arnhem Land. This area comprises approximately 40,000 hectares of land and 600,000 hectares of sea within Castlereagh Bay. The area is of international conservation significance due to its large aggregations of migratory shorebirds, seabird colonies and important marine turtle nesting beaches.
The Crocodile Islands Rangers carry out a range of work that includes:
- marine debris clean ups
- weed and fire management
- pest animal control and quarantine
- cultural site management
- sea country patrols
- surveillance operations
- Indigenous knowledge transfer
- community education
- biodiversity surveys.
