Dhimurru Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) comprises approximately 550,000 hectares of Yolgnu land and sea country. It is located in the Gove Peninsula region of north-east Arnhem Land. Dedicated in 2000, it was the first IPA to include sea country.
Dhimurru Rangers are responsible for the day to day management of the IPA in collaboration with partner agencies. They are supported by the hands-on involvement of the Yolngu community. The rangers use traditional resource management practices, such as fire, to maintain the natural and cultural values of the IPA.
The rangers’ work includes:
- heritage research
- removing ghost nets
- rescuing marine turtles
- monitoring endangered Gove crow butterflies
- controlling weeds.
The rangers are also involved in a Learning on Country school program. This program links ranger activities and excursions to mainstream curriculum outcomes, helping to pass on cultural knowledge to the next generation.
