Gurruwiling, the Arafura Swamp, is a Wetland of National Importance and the largest paperbark swamp in Australia. 
The Arafura Swamp Rangers Aboriginal Corporation comprises eight ranger groups. These include the Gurruwiling, Wanga Djakamirr and South-East Arafura Catchment Rangers and five satellite groups.
These ranger groups look after Gurruwiling, its catchment and adjacent sea country. They use a blend of traditional and modern approaches. 
Activities include: 

  • strategic annual burning for carbon abatement 
  • managing feral animals and weeds 
  • monitoring saltwater intrusion 
  • managing cultural sites 
  • collecting scientific data and eggs from crocodile nests.
