The Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council Rangers patrol an area across Cape York Peninsula that covers approximately 250,000 hectares, including 300 km of coastline. The Northern Peninsula Area is made up of five Indigenous communities, settled by clans from across Cape York and the Torres Strait.

Rangers undertake activities including: 

  • campground management 
  • removal and recording of ghost nets 
  • weed and fire management
  • pest management
  • signing and fencing culturally significant sites.

The rangers’ work has a strong focus on education. Through the Junior Ranger Program the rangers undertake regular school visits. These education activities ensure a sustainable future for their natural resources. 
Their resource partners include:

  • Ghost Nets Australia 
  • Australian Customs and Border Protection Service 
  • the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.
