Gunggandji Land and Sea Rangers

Back to

The Gunggandji Land and Sea Rangers manage the natural and cultural values of Gunggandji country. This country surrounds Yarrabah in Queensland. The rangers undertake training and on-ground activities to establish a professional Indigenous ranger workforce. The rangers are capable of addressing and reducing threats to the natural and cultural resources of Gunggandji country.

In line with the Gunggandji Land and Sea Country Plan, rangers undertake:

  • fire, weed and feral animal management
  • conservation of marine and threatened species.

A large part of the rangers work is the sustainable management of marine species, especially turtles and dugongs. This is achieved through:

  • compliance activities in partnership with regulatory agencies
  • participation in turtle stranding and rehabilitation activities.

The rangers work in partnership with neighbouring Indigenous land managers and management authorities. These groups are active in protecting the World Heritage values of the surrounding Wet Tropics and Great Barrier Reef. Through these partnerships the rangers are advancing Gunggandji management priorities within national park and marine park areas, including the development of a Traditional Use of Marine Resources Agreement (TUMRA).
