The Nijinda Durlga Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) was dedicated in 2014. It is located in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria between Burketown and the Northern Territory border. The IPA covers over 186,850 hectares of the traditional country of the Gangalidda people.

Traditional owners are proud of Gangalidda country and the condition their ancestors left it in. The IPA management plan was developed in consultation with the Gangalidda people. This plan provides realistic outcomes and economic opportunities that embrace conservation and development.

The Gangalidda and Garawa Rangers have been actively managing country since their establishment in 2007. They:

  • carry out a much-needed weed and pest management on country
  • monitor turtle and dugong sightings around two of the islands
  • undertake seagrass sampling
  • manage bird colonies
  • protect cultural sites
  • record traditional knowledge for future generations.
