Normanton Rangers

The Normanton Land and Sea Ranger Unit is comprised of rangers from the three tribal groups in the Lower Gulf of Carpentaria. These are the Kukatj, Gkuthaarn, and Kurtijar. Their operational area covers the Staaten River in the north of Queensland to the Leichardt River in the west. 

The ranger unit carries out conservation and land management activities on country such as:  

  • feral animal management  
  • weed control  
  • fire management  
  • wetland and biodiversity monitoring  
  • conducting activities linked to local Indigenous culture. 

These tasks are directed by the aspirations of traditional owners within their region. It has been formalised in land and sea management plans, developed in consultation within the community.
